Biography

 
Johan was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1976. He studied Theatre Crafts at the Technikon Pretoria and graduatedwith a Master’s Degree in Entertainment Technology from the Tshwane University of Technology, specializing to thefield of Scenic Design. His career in large scale painting for theatre and events has sharpened his skills as a fineartist.


Based in Cape Town, Johan has had numerous solo and group art exhibitions in South Africa and exhibited inAmsterdam, Nairobi and Dubai. His work can be found in private collections in Europe, USA, Canada and Australia,to name a few.

Artist Statement

“ In my recent collection of acrylic and oil paintings, I consciously shine a spotlight on prejudices and promote unity.How? By altering and reworking easily recognizable and incredibly famous artworks. My twist? I splice an Africannarrative into primarily Eurocentric images. By toying with and questioning the widely accepted definition of‘homogeneity’ and renewing it to meet our contemporary world, I show that a homogenous, unified culture is one thatgrants everyone space. And that beauty is much wider than previously accepted in the mainstream Euro-centricviewpoint”.

 

The existence of differences within our society is driven by its arts and culture.Taking what is known and accepted and overturning it with the introduction of cultural narratives that have been overlooked for far too long. Differences and similarities in ethnicity, culture, religion, and a variety of other themes are being explored. Commentary is give non emancipation, strength, immortality, beauty, and pain with the ultimate goal of inclusion
